In 2003, African Services Committee took its successful model of HIV testing, care and support for poor and vulnerable African communities to the frontlines of the global pandemic in Ethiopia. Now in its tenth year of operation, ASC Ethiopia is working in the heart of the community in 5 market-based locations — Addis Ababa, Kombolcha, Mekele, Zeway and Hawassa — targeting the most marginalized populations of street youth, orphans and vulnerable children, commercial sex workers, homeless, internally displaced migrants, and poor day laborers. In 10 years, they have provided free testing for over 140,000 people. Their clinic labs are now state of the art and they have scaled up our services to become one of the few community-based organizations to offer antiretroviral treatment. In league with their partner, DKT Ethiopia, they have provided reproductive health and family planning to more than 14,000 families. They have also had the honor of working with Vitamin Angels, to distribute nutritional support to over 5,000 children and mothers. This is in addition to their fruitful partnership with TOMS Shoes, where we have fitted children with over 25,000 pairs of new shoes!
Join us on Tuesday, October 29th, 2013 at 7 pm to celebrate and support 10 years of HIV health services in Ethiopia, at From Harlem to Addis. In addition to BRC coffee, prepare to be immersed in the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of Ethiopia with renowned Ethiopian band, Arki Sound, upscale Ethiopian hors d’oeuvres from Abyssinia Restaurant, specialty Ethiopia-inspired cocktails from Lucky Dog Vodka, and an Ethiopian ‘marketplace’ with jewelry, scarves, carvings and other items. Tickets are on sale now and all proceeds go directly to their work in Ethiopia. Visit here to purchase tickets.
